Volume 5 Chapter 30: A Report of the Incident

In order to explain what had happened in the Kingdom of Esfort, nearly all nobles had gathered.

It became really busy in the royal castle with having to greet all of the nobles. Basically all nobles had gathered, and the ones that couldn’t attend due to their own problems had still sent representatives to the castle.

In the meantime, Cain went to visit the church.

He wanted to ask about Corgino, who had become the Evil God’s Apostle.

He knelt down in front of the seven statues, put his hands together in prayer, and as always, his field of vision changed to the pure-white world of the gods.

Zenom urged Cain to sit down.

However, unlike normal, the gods had grim looks on their faces.

It was definitely due to Cain and Aaron’s confrontation.

“…Cain, we were watching. First, we’d like to thank you. To think Aaron would regain consciousness…”

Zenom bowed lightly.

“This time it was close-by, so I was able to deal with him, but if it were to happen elsewhere…?”

Zenom nodded at Cain’s question.

“Aaron was sealed into many jewel fragments, which were then hidden all over the world. You saw one at the bottom of the dungeon near the city you live in, did you not.”

Cain recalled going to the dungeon in Drintor’s forest one time due to being stressed and meeting an Ancient Dragon there.

(Now that I think of it, he did say something was being sealed there…)

“Indeed, he is sealed away in pieces all over the world like in that dungeon. However, some of them have been excavated and taken away by humans. This time, it was one of those too.”

“So, similar things might happen from now on…”

“Yes, he might be sealed away, but people might still be tempted by the jewels. What happens after they get their hands on that power depends on the person though… I don’t want them landing in the hands of the wrong people.”

“Understood. If one ever lands in my hands…”

“I’m counting on you, Cain.”

Returning to the church, Cain got in his carriage and went to the royal castle.

The nobles would now receive an explanation about what had happened. Corgino’s schemes had been that large in scale.

Also, the gathering would be used to dismantle his faction as well.

As Cain was a count, a higher-ranking noble, the lower-ranked nobles were already waiting in the hall when he entered.

No matter that Cain was still a child, there was no way lower-ranked nobles could just call out to him.

“Sir Silford, it has been a long time.”

But then, someone called out to him.

Turning around, Cain’s face relaxed slightly upon seeing who it was.

“It has been a long time, ––Sir Santos.”

It was Sarah’s father and Cain’s grandfather, Viscount Geletta.

“To have the nobles here in full force… I wonder if something happened…”

Cain knew the circumstances behind it, but as it was not something he should say, he stayed quiet on the matter.

Moreover, Cain hadn’t touched the negotiations with Ilstin at all, and didn’t even know how it had turned out.

“They’ll probably explain later, I think… But this many people is spectacular indeed.”

“Yes, it is quite. Ah, sorry for stopping you. Let’s talk again when there’s time.”

“Yeah. Definitely, let’s.”

Cain gave a light bow and went to where he was supposed to stand.

Once the nobles had all lined up, the signal for the king’s entrance resounded through the hall.

Everyone stood up and bowed their heads, placing their hands on their chests.

Then, the king made his entrance and slowly went up to and sat down on the throne.

“Everyone, you may be at ease.”

At those words, they all raised their heads and sat down in their seats.

“It is necessary to explain to everyone the goings-on that have happened. Thank you for coming to the royal capital even though you are all busy. Magna, if you would be so kind.”

At the king’s words, Magna, documents in hand, began to explain.

The contents of the explanation were so shocking that loud voices rose from the nobles.

An attack incident Corgino had planned and had had carried out on the students of the royal academy during their school trip to the Republic of Ilstin.

And then the mad actions of Marquis Corgino himself.

Moreover, a former MP of the Republic of Ilstin colluding with the Dark Guild, and soldiers from Terenza on the Esfort side had carried out the attack.

Among the ones attacked was not only the Third Princess Telestia, but many other nobles’ children; even Cain’s name was mentioned.

Then, the explanation ended with how Cain’s exertions had solved the case in its entirety.

Having finished the explanation, Magna stepped away, and Duke Eric stepped forward in his place.

“Now, I will explain about the negotiations with the Republic of Ilstin. Firstly, –– a transfer of territory was decided upon. The Republic of Ilstin will transfer one of its territories lying near the Kingdom of Esfort over to the Kingdom. Also––––”

The negotiations had ended with the transfer of territory and reparation fees.

Regarding the reparations, they were quite different in amount of digits to the reparation fee Cain had received when he had been attacked in Ghazal.

The reparations amounted to ten-thousand platinum coins, or one-hundred-milliard Yen (100 000 000 000 ¥ = ~914 565 800 $).

However, there was no way they would be able to pay that much all at once. If they did, the whole country would go bankrupt.

So the payment would be done over ten years.

And, in all honesty, Esfort hadn’t even been damaged.

However, it had been an attack on the royalty, head of a noble family, and children of nobility of the Kingdom.

It was the same as saying ‘Shall we go to war?’.

Duke Eric also finished his explanation.

“Lastly. Magna, explanation, please.”

Magna stepped forward again.

“––Count Cain von Silford Drintor, step forth.”

Even while being astonished at being called forward, Cain went before the king and knelt down, bowing his head.

“I, Cain von Silford Drintor, am here.”

“Raise your face.”

Cain looked up.

The king made a smile as if he was planning something, making Cain nervous.

“This time, you have made a splendid achievement. If you had not been here, –– I don’t know what things would have happened to my daughter and the rest. Also, sorry for making you deal with Corgino… Magna, explain please.”

“Yes, Your Majesty. Sir Silford, with this achievement, you will be made a margrave. You will govern the town of Terenza, as well as our country’s newly acquired territory.”

(So this is what His Majesty was aiming for…)

“––––I, Cain von Silford Drintor, will most certainly work for the prosperity of this Kingdom.”

However, voices of opposition were sure to rise. While Corgino was gone, some of his faction still remained.

“Please wait. Regarding the Ilstinean attack and Corgino-dono’s madness, it was explained that they happened at the same time. And both of them were apparently suppressed by Sir Silford… Is that not strange, no matter how one thinks about it… Consider the distance as well…”

All the nobles there were surely thinking the same thing.

The only ones who actually understood were the nobles who knew that Cain could use transfer magic.

However, they had already discussed this.

No matter what, a contradiction would appear to have occurred regarding the explanation of the case. Therefore, Magna had suggested something to them beforehand.

That they should say that just once a day, using an enormous amount of magical power, Cain could Transfer…

And how it was the reason why even though he was still a minor, the Kingdom regarded Cain so highly.

And why Telestia, Silk, and Tifana were all going to marry him.

That was just how legendary transfer magic was.

“I will speak regarding that. Sir Silford… can use ‘Transfer Magic’. The one spoken of in legends. During the attack, he used that transfer magic to come to the royal capital from Ilstin to explain what was going on. Is that enough…?”

Everyone attending –– was lost for words.

The legendary transfer magic. The magic that the founder of the Kingdom of Esfort, Yuuya, the Hero had been able to use.

“––––Is Sir Silford… perhaps… the Hero…?”

The noble who had objected nearly screamed upon seeing the king was serious.

However, the king shook his head at those words.

“That is not the case. It is said the founding king was summoned from another world. And Sir Silford over there is the son of Sir Garm.”

“But, like this, all national defence will fall solely to the Silford family.”

Cain also thought so. The only margrave Esfort currently had was his father, Garm.

Margraves had their own armies, and could do battle with other countries at their own discretion.

As a margrave, Garm, along with Viscount Tris, protected Lamesta’s fort from the Baisas empire.

The Kingdom of Esfort was surrounded by the Republic of Ilstin to the north-east, the Baisas Empire to the west, and the Holy Country of Marineford to the south-east.

If the country placed a margrave on the side near the Holy Country of Marineford, it would turn into quite the problem indeed.

And until then, Esfort had mainly only done trade with the Republic of Ilstin, and with no wars in the past, there was also no margrave.

However, due to the recent case, the Kingdom’s territory had expanded, and it was necessary to protect it.

But that didn’t mean it should all be left to the Silford family.

If the Silford family were to rebel… Anyone would have misgivings.

“There will be no problems regarding that. Sir Silford will be marrying my daughter, Telestia. Also, it has been newly decided that second prince Rolan will –––– be taking Miss Reine, the oldest daughter of the Silford family, as his wife.”

“Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh!?”

Cain was so astonished by the king’s words that he shouted out loud.

    1. Milliard >> million
    2. If those numbers are correct, it should be one-hundred-billion Yen instead.

    1. The translater could be from a country like Denmark (Which i am) where we go from Million to Milliard and the Billion, that could explan it. And if this is correct then the 100 Milliard is the same as 100 Billion

      Liked by 1 person

    2. Millions < Milliards < Billons < Billiard , etc, it's the order. It's the case in France, for example. Millions is 6 zero, Milliard 9, Billions 12. Just need to convert when in a country which jump directly from Million to Billion. It's the same kind of difference than floor's building. In english country or Japan, for example, the lowest floor is the 1st floor. In country like France, the lowest floor is a floor 0 called " Rez-de-chaussée". You need to convert because 1st floor in France is Second Floor in Japan.

      1. To be fair though, this is an english translation, where it goes million -> billion -> trillion

    3. I wonder why someone need to convert it in yen? What is the point of this number? The prices for same goods different even in one country Japan depending on region, not talking about different countries and different worlds. This is so idiotic, like measuring weight in Fahrenheit degrees, those things are incomparable

  6. Not all dukes are reserve royalty. Some dukes were traditionally monarchs of their Duchies. Also, in reality, a margrave/marquis/marquess are all the same thing. In this story I believe it was mentioned that Cain’s dad had that specific title margrave because he was at the border and it was a military based title whereas Corgino was not military and was thus a marquis. I may be mixing up my stories. However, in real life, whether you were a margrave/marquis/marquess depended on what country you were from. They are all the same rank but countries called them by different names and traditionally they defended their land which was at the border, which was called a march.

  7. what a surprise~
So marrying them to the royal family so it would looked like the royal family owns Cain and their family’s war potential~

    1. it still is giving an awful lot of power to the Silford family… on the surface it looks like the King is doing things to “tame” the family, “Shackle” them to the kingdom so to speak, but it also works the other way around…

And having the bulk of the military in the Kingdom belong to the royal family feels wrong hahaha, but I’ve read too many stories where the military, economy and territory are split among different houses to keep checks and balances (the whole 3 factions stuff).

With this the “King” would be implementing a kind of… authoritarian rule instead of a Noble parliament, it’s weird that the author chose this route but I guess he didn’t really think too deeply about it.

It kind of makes sense if you dismiss the other Noble houses as being secondary… which in this work they definitely are.

      1. Still, a king owns all land and everything and everyone on that land. Even granting land and titles is just sharing the king’s responsibilities, loaning out what is his.

People of a kingdom are property of the crown.
Nobles being powerful enough to stop or stymie a king shows corruption, not that that is how things are meant to work.

        1. Well, Nobles were in a manner of speaking “Small Kings” of their own territory it’s of course dependant on region and kingdom but most of this things started as tribes banding together under a ruler to fight other bigger tribes, the Nobles were quite literally the “chieftains” of their region.

All this comes from the way the Romans ruled their country, without the Romans, history would be weird, but it was them who started the way of government (delegating regions to people)

It’s an interesting mix and match of a system that was mostly democratic (the romans), with the old inheritance customs and common knowledge laws of who owned what because of ancestry (old tribes and chieftains).

There are cases where a “Duke” was actually a King in his own right that decided to join another kingdom and serve him, but the lands were by the full letter of the law owned by the Duke, the King could promote laws that would be enforced on all the kingdom, for example, but they would still need to be approved by the nobles.

Most territories managed by Nobles were, by right, “not” of the king, they belonged to the nobles that served under the king, the king couldn’t just come and take it all without a fight… and the protest of other nobles (that would be understandably pissed the king is taking land from under them).

I guess it depends on “which” kingdom you’re looking at, but historically a Monarchy was not a Tyranny.

  8. yep, basically Marquis are given their title because the vaste territory and economy weight is able to sway the country
Margrave are given their title for a similar reason, the power of their army is significant enough to sway the country

Dukes are usually “reserve royalty” they are the closer blood related to the royal family, but that doesn’t always correspond to actual power

    Like

    1. Thank you for the information……. I just didn’t know Dukes were considered reserve royalty…….

      1. It really depends on the Kingdom you are talking about. Most royal families take siblings of the King and give them court positions. Women get married into other families and take their husband’s title and station. Sometimes men remain “prince” for life, with their own children becoming lesser nobles with title and usually made into administrative personnel serving the king. Or they could be awarded lands to rule over.

Some royal families make those other Princes into Dukes. A Duke needs a significant amount of followers to be taken seriously. That means title and deed over land of their own, and lesser nobles that they are responsible for. The English Royal family is like that. They maintain several Duke titles that get passed to the princes and reclaimed after a generation to be used by the royal family again when needed.

And then there is France. The Dukes in France were related to the King, and most of the other nobles in Europe. As such, every Duke in France was eligible to become King. If one of the Dukes could overpower the King and the other Dukes, he could crown himself King of France. Most French wars were fought between Dukes, for all sorts of reasons. Frances worst enemy was France. The King’s first son would inherit the title of Duke as well as King. Forming a new Dukedom was impossible and would be opposed by the other Dukes unless new territory was conquered. Even then the new territory would go to which ever Duke conquered it. In France, the King didn’t make Dukes, rather the King was the most powerful Duke.

  9. that move is basically saying:

nobles: “wait, if we put all our defense in the hands of their family, they can threaten the royalty!”
king: “way ahead of you, with this move, they ARE part of the royalty, they won’t rebel against themselves”

  10. Hey uh do you mind changing the “one-hundred-thousand-million Yen” to “one-billion yen”? I know that that’s the way it’s written in Japanese, and idk if you’ve decided that this way conveys the shock more or smth, but do you mind changing it anyway?

  12. I expected Cain to be made a Marquis, but Margrave… it’s a rank quite obscure to me, I can’t quite understand exactly how high it is in the Baron -> Discount (lol) -> Count -> Marquis -> Duke hierarchy… Is it even a fixed rank, or may change depending on territory and person?

    1. dont mind it, most of jp light novels hadly explain the nobility rank well enough..
they tend to gloss over it.

and the weird part is back then in medieval europe each landholding nobles
are having their own troops and lend it to their liege (superior noble) as levies..
but this novel simply put only *royal troops* and *mangraves*.
even weirder, so far only one mangrave. didnt they (the royal family) risk getting ursurped?
normally, you would want check and balance between nobles — hence “factions.”

that being said, around renaissance era troops are more centralised.

      1. Actually, each nobles have their troops (in this LN), but not really comparable to margraves which their territories are near the borders of different kingdoms so they’re for security purposes. Of course, knowing that Cain have now become a margrave, the king made a move in having the eldest daughter, Reine, of Gram Silford, Cain’s father, marry the second prince of Esfort. Offering the opportunity for the Silford family becoming part of royalty so that they wouldn’t betray the Royal Family. Considering the status of the Esfort Kingdom, they’re both a major force of the continent and a peaceful country, but of course there are still corrupt nobles.

In this case, it’s just the author’s amateur world building and writing that made aristocracy in this story very confusing.
