Chapter 4: The Baptism

The day of Cain’s baptism had arrived.

This world’s life expectancy was, unlike back in Japan, not good.

Many children died not long after they were born.

Thus, it had become tradition to send a prayer in thanks to the gods when a child reached the age of five, celebrating the occasion and asking for guidance for the future.

One also became able to use status magic as a result of this.

“Now that I think of it, we never celebrated my birthday.”

Normally, people only celebrated one’s fifth, tenth, and fifteenth birthdays, the final one of which also signalled coming of age.

Deep in thought about the world, Cain changed into the fancy clothes for nobles that had been put out for him.

“Cain-sama have you finished getting ready yet? It’s time to go.”

Silvia said, knocking on the door, then entering.

“Oh, Silvia. Yeah, I’m ready.”

They left the room together, Silvia in her usual maid outfit.

His father, mother, and big sister Reine were already waiting for him outside.

“Sorry to have kept you waiting, father.”

Cain apologised to his father for being late, bowing his head.

Garm smiled and waved the apology away with a hand.

“No matter. On a different note, you look completely different in those clothes. And you really match with Sarah like that.”

“Cain-kun you’re so cuuuuuuuuuteeeeeeee!!”

Reine said, rubbing up against Cain.

She might have been a bit of a brocon, but she still took care of him.

She had often searched the whole mansion basement to attic looking for him when he was outside practising magic, because Cain always hid himself when doing so.

“Thank you, Reine-nee-sama.”

Cain answered with an honest smile.

Then, the carriages were also ready, which their butler, Sebas, came to tell them.

“The carriages are ready, so please get in.”

The whole family got in the carriage, Garm first, then Sarah next to him, then Reine and Cain opposite them.

“Let us depart.”

The carriage slowly began rolling along at the butler’s signal.

“By the way, once I receive Status magic, how will I be able to use it?”

Cain asked Reine, having never seen status magic before.

“Oh right, you’ve never seen it before! I’ll show you mine.”

Then, she half-sang half-chanted [Status Open]

A semitransparent, glass-like screen appeared before her.

“If you say ‘Status’, only you will be able to see it, and if you say ‘Status Open’, other people will also be able to see.”

“You’re amazing, Reine-nee-san.”

Cain said, staring at the semitransparent, glasslike screen.

“Cain-kun, come closer, I’ll show it to you properly!”

He squished up against her, taking a look at the status board.

“…”

He had seen a title there he shouldn’t have.

“Ah! Whoops, I left my titles out. You didn’t see anything, did you?”

She said, inspecting his expression while slightly embarrassed.

“Wow, you can use three different elements!”

Cain pretended he hadn’t seen.

“Phew, you didn’t see.”

Reine answered with a smile, patting her chest in relief.

Garm was also smiling. It seemed to be quite the excellent Status board Reine had.

“Magic and Blessings go from level one through five, and people with many of them are stronger. You can raise your Magic’s level by training, and if the gods like you, the Blessings’ levels will also rise.”

Apparently, court magicians usually had magic and blessing levels between three and five. Reaching level five apparently meant you were important enough to leave your name behind in the records of history.

Cain looked out of the carriage window at the city with its shops and stalls and bustling streets.

It took them about thirty minutes to get to the church, getting out of the carriage in front of its main doors and heading to the reception.

“It’s Garm von Silford Gracia. My son turned five today, so we came for a baptism. The priest should already have been informed.”

Garm said to the receptionist.

“Yes, the priest has already told us. Please do come this way, sir.”

The receptionist gave a polite bow as etiquette required when dealing with the lord of the territory, then showed them inside.

They walked into the church, where she opened a door, stopping next to it and bowing them inside.

“The altar is being prepared, so please wait here.”

The room they had been ushered into was a modest reception room.

A nun prepared them all tea, placing the cups in front of them.

“I will come and inform you once everything is ready, so please wait here until then.”

“It’s nearly time, Cain. There’s no need for you to be so tense though. The priest will explain everything. Once the ceremony’s over, we’ll go home and celebrate. As for your first public appearance, we’ll talk about that some other time.”

“It would be nice if Cain-kun had a good affinity for magic or good blessings!”

Reine said happily.

“You’re my son, so naturally, you’ll have a good affinity for magic. Maybe even as much as Reine”, Sarah happily proclaimed.

Thanks to his practising magic in secret, Cain could use all four basic elements of magic already, so he wasn’t worried about affinity for magic.

And if he showed his parents that he had a good affinity with all four elements, his parents would surely be happy as well, he thought as he sipped his tea.

The family happily chatted away until there was a knock on the door and a nun entered the room.

“Everything is ready; please follow me.”

They followed the nun to the room with the altar in it.

There was a priest waiting in front of the altar, behind which were seven statues, one of each god, with the one in the middle slightly larger than the rest. Sunlight was shining through the windows, making the room sparkle fantastically.

“Sorry to have made you wait, Sir Gracia. Now then, I shall begin the baptism ceremony for Cain von Silford. Please step forward.”

With a little prompt from Garm, Cain walked forward, then went down on one knee in front of the priest, putting his hands together.

“Cain von Silford, the seven Gods of Marineford celebrate thine baptism. May you continue to live a faithful life.”

The priest then turned around to face the statues, and also went down on one knee, his hand put together in prayer.

“O, Gods protecting this world, please grant Cain von Silford Status magic and show him the Way.”

Then, the world turned white.

  1. It’s nice of you to translate the previously translated chapters and add them to your web page. By any chance do you know why the author hasn’t updated the story and written any new chapters in the last 5-6 months? I mean if he can’t continue writing perhaps he should allow someone else to finish the story in his place?

    1. he said on twitter that he’s busy with work
that was like, 4-5 months or more ago though

on a different note, he just announced that volume 7 of the light novel will be out on tuesday, so hopefully he’ll get back to writing because vol. 8 of the web novel is unfinished and thus can’t be turned into a light novel
