Cain gave permission to enter, and the door slowly opened.

Mel peeked in through the gap, her cheeks dyed a slight shade of embarrassment.

“Do you have a minute…?”

“Sure, it’s too early to sleep anyway. Come on in.”

Mel nodded in response and slowly stepped into the room while closing the door, then sat down on the sofa facing Cain.

“If you don’t mind waiting a sec, I’ll make some tea.”

Cain took out two cups from his Item Box and poured the still-hot tea from a similarly procured teapot into them, then handed one of the cups to Mel.

He sat down opposite her, and brought the cup up to his face.

Mel seemed slightly fidgety as she blew across the tea to cool it down, but she seemed to calm down after drinking some.

“Umm… Can I ask you something?”

“If it’s something I can answer. It’s not like I can answer absolutely anything.”

Mel had straightened her back as she looked at Cain with a serious expression, but, blushing a bit, she looked away again when their eyes met.

“Cain-dono, you’re probably rather strong, yes? Probably strong enough to conquer this country with strength to spare, from what I can tell. And yet you’re not going to the front lines?”

Cain was confident that if he were to appear on the battlefield, he would be able to win against even a huge number of enemies.

However, it was a strict rule in the Kingdom of Esfort that only people of age were allowed to go to the battlefield.

Although, Cain was fully intent on going to the battlefield himself if Esfort, or especially if any acquaintances of his had been harmed, but… that was not the case at the moment.

“I’m not proud of it, but I’m probably even stronger than you think, Mel. But, Esfort has made its decision. There might be times when I need to use my strength to defend myself, but I cannot go and defeat enemies proactively.”

Mel gave him an incredulous look, then sighed as if having given up.

To her, Cain was a really powerful person, someone who had made her surrender to him, which was exactly why she wanted him to go to the front lines.

“T-then, do you think you would be able to protect me if we were together?”

Mel was the Princess of Kermes, so despite being a beastman, who were known for being battle fanatics, she couldn’t just be exposed to danger.

“Sure, if you were close by. Still, you’re a princess, so it’s not like you can head tot he front lines. I doubt His Majesty your father would permit it either.”

“So you’re saying that if father says yes then you have no problem with it…?”

Mel cupped her chin in her hand, deep in thought.

However, while Cain was prepared to go to the front lines, he wasn’t going to participate in battle.

“I don’t mind accompanying you if you get permission, but I’m not going to fight. Well, unless I have to protect myself… What’s important at the moment is healing the wounded.”

In fact, as long as they weren’t dead, Cain’s recovery magic could heal someone even if they had lost all their limbs.

Moreover, he had no intention or reason to hide his power. He was going to single-handedly make sure that a large number of soldiers could return home.

“I understand your thoughts. I’ll talk to father. I want to accompany you, if possible. I want to see the soldiers fighting for my country with my own eyes.”

Mel said, staring straight at him, to which he nodded in response.

“Gotcha. Like I said, I don’t mind if you get permission, but if it does happen, I want you to listen to what I say.”

“Yes, okay. Thanks for hearing me out, at this time of day no less. I’ll go ask father immediately.”

Gulping down the remainder of her tea, Mel stood up and left the room with a “Goodnight”.

Now alone, Cain’s thoughts turned to the Heroes, the reason he had agreed to go along.

“Four summoned people… I wonder if they’re Japanese… They said one of them wasn’t a combatant, but…”

If they were Japanese, he didn’t think it was morally justifiable for them to be participating in a war on the front lines.

Cain himself had in fact fought criminals before, but they had been in conflict since the very beginning, and he had had no choice but to do so for the sake of himself, and more importantly, his loved ones.

He wouldn’t have hesitated to fight on the front lines if Gracia were to be attacked, but he didn’t intend on doing the same for one foreign country invading another.

Still the question of whether he would move if his opponents turned out to be Japanese after all remained in his mind.

“Well, let’s see what happens tomorrow…”

He put his now empty mug back in his Item Box, lied down, and went to sleep.

It was the next day, and servants were busy packing supplies to be taken to the battlefield onto carts and carriages.

A caravan of thirty carts and carriages had been formed for the transportation of supplies medical and otherwise.

Having finished breakfast earlier, Cain and Randal had just gotten into the carriage prepared for them when Mel came running over, waving.

“Cain-dono~! Father gave me permission!”

Randal glanced at Cain.

“Cain-dono… Don’t tell me Her Highness Princess Mel is coming with us…?”

Cain nodded in response to Randal’s panicked question with a faint smile on his face.

“I told her to get His Majesty’s permission… but it seems like she succeeded.”

Mel also got into their carriage and sat down next to Cain.

“Fufufun~”

With a wry smile on Cain’s face and Mel in good spirits, the signal for departure was given, and the carriage slowly began to move.

Their carriage had begun making its way to the front lines.
