At Hinata’s request, her and everyone associated with the church would be handing out food in the slums.

Cain went to the royal castle to pick Hinata up, and then they headed off to the place they would be handing out the food at in the same fashion as they had gone to the church.

No matter how prosperous Esfort was, it still had slums. Orphans who didn’t live in orphanages and people who couldn’t find employment and thus just sat around on street corners: their carriage made its way past such people.

Arriving at the place they would be handing the food out, some sisters and cooperators with the church were already getting everything ready.

Hinata rolled up her sleeves and went and joined them in order to help out.

Cain was there as her bodyguard, so he watched over her from close by.

Hinata put vegetables and meat in a large pot, and prepared bowls and spoons.

When they started handing out the food, so many inhabitants of the slums gathered, it was difficult to believe so many of them had actually existed.

Guards guided them to the queue, but there were so many people from the slums there, even the guards were surprised. Drintor had had slums as well, albeit very small ones. But now, the Dark Guild had been dismantled, an orphanage, job-finding offices, new homes and finally a park had been built, so life there had now stopped being one of suffering.

However, unlike Drintor, where only a few thousand people lived, the royal capital could be called a huge city, as it had some three-hundred-thousand inhabitants. As such, one would need an enormous budget and equally many people do do the same thing there as in Drintor.

No matter how many were lined up in front of the pot, Hinata still filled the bowls with food and passed them over to the residents of the slums. And in return, there was no end to the people who thanked her, crying from happiness.

But, there were still dozens of people in the line, waiting to receive food.

While Cain was watching all that happen, two guards ran up to him.

They were out of breath, so going up to Cain, they took a couple deep breaths before they started talking.

“You’re Viscount Silford, right? There’s an urgent summons from the royal castle for you.”

“Indeed, that would be me, but… I’m currently the Saint-sama’s bodyguard.”

Cain was there as the Saint’s bodyguard. He had no idea why he was being summoned.

“That might be so, but… Marquis Corgino said to summon Viscount Silford…”

Upon hearing the name ‘Corgino’, Cain frowned.

Cain, who, as a viscount, was only a lower-rank noble, would usually have to obey summons from higher-rank nobles like marquises, but he was going to refuse that he was guarding the Saint on royal orders.

“Sorry, but not now. Maybe after I’m finished with guarding the Saint-sama.”

Cain answered, but the guard started trying to convince him otherwise, saying he was told to ‘Definitely bring him back here,’ with an apologetic face.

While they were having such a back-and-forth, a voice came from behind them.

“Cain-dono, you were summoned to the royal capital. We’re plenty as the Saint-sama’s bodyguards. You should go.”

It was the captain. He was making a face that obviously said he wanted a nuisance to leave.

“Even if you say that, I’m currently being her bodyguard, so…”

“So, you don’t believe in us bodyguards? Are you saying that the Holy Country’s prestigious bodyguard corps can’t protect the Saint-sama?”

“– – Understood. I’ll be leaving for a bit. Please take care of her during that time.”

Cain had no choice but to nod, after which he left for the royal castle.

“I’ll be going to the royal castle. Sorry, but could you gather some men to guard the Saint-sama? It would be a problem if something happened to her.”

The guard nodded, and went to call for backup. Cain explained to Hinata that he had been summoned to the royal castle and would be stepping out for a bit, then got on his carriage and headed off.

He arrived half an hour or so later, and was guided to Marquis Corgino’s office by a maid. Knocking on the door, the maid said that Cain was there, and after a voice came from inside saying ‘You can come in,’ she opened the door and stood to the side.

“Do go in…”

Doing as he was told by the maid, Cain entered Marquis Corgino’s office.

Every available space inside the office had an extravagant ornament on it, something Cain found not to be all that tasteful, but it seemed like the absurdly rich were all about it.

“I’m Cain von Silford Drintor. Your Excellency Marquis Corgino, on what business have you called me here…”

Marquis Corgino, who had been slouching in his office, smirked at Cain and beckoned him closer.

Cain sat down in the middle of the sofa he was shown to, while Marquis Corgino sat his heavy body down on a sofa opposite him.

“Sir Cain, I have a favour to ask of you… I want… some of the glasses the Sarakhan company you’re associated with is selling. My wife saw them when she went over to someone else’s place, and now she’s been urging me to get some, as she wants them no matter what. And, thus, I’m at a loss here as to what to do…”

Having left his job of being the Saint’s bodyguard halfway through because he had thought he was being summoned for something major, became speechless at finding out he had only been summoned for something so trifling.

Thinking about how he had left his job for such an insignificant matter, Cain’s mood worsened.

“I’m terribly sorry, but there’s only a limited amount of them for sale. If you make a reservation, we will contact you as soon as they’re finished…”

No matter how bad a mood he was in, the other party here was a high-rank noble. Not wanting to insult him, Cain gave a polite reply.

“But that’s the thing, even using the name of a marquis family to make the reservation, you have to wait multiple months. And they all cost a whole gold coin too! Although, those glasses are indeed quite the wonderful products. And thus, they should be used by higher-rank nobles, no? Come now, Sir Cain.”

“But I’m leaving sales to the company…”

Even then, Marquis Corgino tried to pull Cain back in.

“But Sir Cain, surely you must have some products not being sold by the company with you? If you just parted with that much, it would be fine. Then, whenever you need it, I’ll give you advice on how to govern your territory.”

Cain grimaced more and more as Marquis Corgino became increasingly haughty. However, there were indeed still glasses stored away in his [Item Box]. But, as they were ones he regularly presented to the king, they weren’t something he would part with so easily. And he would especially not give them to Marquis Corgino, whom he found quite disgusting.

But, as he couldn’t stay there for a long time while he was supposed to be being the Saint’s bodyguard, Cain took out a single box from his [Item Box] as if he had just remembered it, and put it down on the table.

“This is a pair of glasses. If it’s only this, then I’m willing to part with them.”

Marquis Corgino’s eyes widened, and he opened the lid expectantly.

Inside the box were two glasses, one with a red pattern on it, and one with a blue one.

Their beauty really seemed to have caught Marquis Corgino’s eye.

“Oho! This, yes, now this! Sir Cain, I am ever so grateful! I’ll immediately get two gold coins ready.”

Raising his heavy body, Marquis Corgino took out a small pouch from his desk and put two gold coins into it.

“With this, my wife will finally stop complaining. I really am grateful.”

“Nono, I’m terribly sorry for only being able to do this much for you.”

Cain put the money away in his pocket.

“Then, I’m supposed to be the Saint-sama’s bodyguard, so if you would excuse me.”

Cain stood up, wanting to return to his bodyguard duties as soon as he could.

Leaving Marquis Corgino in high spirits in his room, Cain took a deep breath.

The pair of glasses he had given Marquis Corgino were souvenirs for the visitors back from his announcement party in his mansion. As Marquis Corgino and his son had incurred the anger of the king, they had run away early, and so he had not been able to give them theirs.

Wanting to go back to his bodyguard duties as soon as he could, Cain had remembered them, and decided to give them over then, as he hadn’t done so yet. He had even gotten two gold coins in return.

Cain left the royal castle in a hurry to get back to guarding Hinata.

Another half an hour by carriage later, he arrived back at the place they were handing out the food at. As they got closer, Cain noticed that the movements of the people were strange.

Some were running away, bowls still in hand. Cain got off his carriage, and, squeezing through the crowd, he made his way to where they were handing out the food.

– – Lying there on the ground, was Hinata.

Cain rushed over to her.

“What’s going on!?”

Cain yelled at the guards.

“I don’t really know… I think some kid ran up to the Saint-sama and touched her for a split second then ran off again, and a little while later, the Saint-sama collapsed.”

Cain held Hinata and used [High Heal] on her.

However, Hinata’s consciousness didn’t return.

“I’m taking her to the church! Bring my carriage over!”

Cain yelled at a guard, who ran off towards Cain’s carriage.

Then, someone tried to block Cain from lifting Hinata onto his carriage.

“This is a blunder of this country… what are going to do about it!”

Cain departed in the carriage, ignoring the angry captain.

Arriving at the church five minutes later, Cain went inside, still holding Hinata. There, he laid her down on a bed that had been prepared.

Even though he had cast healing magic, her face was still deathly pale, she hadn’t regained her consciousness. The bishop then rushed into the room and, seeing her symptoms, his face paled.

“No way, the Saint-sama is… How did it come to this…”

“Bishop-sama, I cast healing magic on her, but she hasn’t improved at all.”

The bishop shook his head at the frantic Cain.

“It might be poison… I’ll try casting [Poison Cure]”

The bishop cast poison curing magic on Hinata, but her complexion didn’t improve a single bit.

“A poison that even [Poison Cure] doesn’t work on…”

While the bishop had seemed to have given up, Cain used [Appraisal], something not everyone could use.

“Bishop-sama, do you know what ‘The Poison of Delpone’ is?”

Upon hearing those words, the bishop’s face paled, seemingly having given up completely.

also, I changed the Marquis’ name from the previous translation of ‘Golgino’ to ‘Corgino’, because that’s his name (コルジーノ, Korujiino)

  1. Ok, so I’m 24 yo. And this ePiSoDe felt a tad bit stupider than usual, but of course I’ll continue to read it

  2. reading this chapter was annoying, he didn’t have to go to the marquis because he is on royal orders, and no noble is above royalty.

  3. Wow. The writing here was just… What on Earth was the author thinking… I’m wondering what the JP reactions were like to this chapter. Thank you for translating this, I’m sure it was very mentally draining.

I was all the chapter thinking he was deceiving the bodyguards to do somethink and he intervine before that happens(and this is stupid itself), but this is so much worse than that.

  6. I love this novel but I have to be honest here, this chapter was incredibly poorly written and stupid!! Like, did the author really forgot that his job in guarding the Saint was a direct order from the king himself!!! And now ur telling me that he can ditch the job because a Marcus summoned him!!! That was really fcking stupid and disappointing!! 😞

  7. I’ve had no major problems with this novel so far but this is incredibly stupid, like some of the worst writing I’ve ever read. Hopefully it gets back to being a 5/10 soon.

    1. I‘m at the last chapter of the raws and can only say from the googletranslater that this is more or less the only part where i got the feeling… otherwise i have to say for the story that will unfold thats probebly the only way this would work( you will know in the next chapter/ its for the arc after the next one) dont know how that would work otherwise. only other option would be to let someone other get piosend

on the other hand if the guards werent the ones behind that assasinationatempt who would think that a little kid in the slums would try to poison the saint which is giving food to them, would you as guard stop a little kid? to be honest i wouldnt depending on the situation. for example if the kid doesnt wait in line with a bowl or so and just walking strait there probably i would stop them. a little bit to less of a picture that we have here of the situation 😅

  9. Thank you very much translator-san…I’m sorry but this is just too stupid. It’s like the author sometimes thinks the readers are idiots or something. I mean Cain knows what the Holy Knights are after, he already disrupted a couple of their attempts, the Gods told him to protect the saint properly and the king told him to guard her 24/7 yet he goes and does this shit. He was even given a royal seal to cope with these problems yet he goes and follows the badies like an incompetant. Its just bad writing to make him rage and show how badass he can be.
P.S sorry for the rant….can’t stand shit like this which keeps reoccurring when normally its a pleasant read..

    1. Dude could of just teleported once he got in his carriage saying that he ran all the way there from the orphanage or wherever they are and just had his carriage meet him there and then teleported back and had his carriage do the same. But no he took an half an hour ride back and forth given them enough time to pull off this stupid stunt. Apparently, that necklace doesn’t have danger sense or anything similar added in to it, that would be way more useful than them having to pouring in their own magical power.

  11. the good thing about the saint being poisoned is, now Cain can fuck those guards and especially the captain, he can basically say “You are incompetent, from now on you are nothing but decoration as a guards, not that there is any difference from before”

    1. thats the problem with nobility, he got a lower rank and must obey the higher rank
then there is the possibility of insulting another country (the assassin guards), which made him have no choice but to go

      Like

      1. Not necessarily.

Cain should never have left, because he was her bodyguard due to a royal order.
That trumps any order given by higher nobility.

As such, he should have refused with a statement along the lines of, “I am not available until I fulfill the order given to me by the king.”

  14. I know that Cain doesn’t want to create a rift between the 2 countries because of some guard of the other country said “So, you don’t believe in us bodyguards? Are you saying that the Holy Country’s prestigious bodyguard corps can’t protect the Saint-sama?”, but this is stupid. The moment Colgino said he wanted the glasses, he should’ve gotten angry, lower ranked noble or not, he is under the King’s orders. Better yet, tell the messenger and the bodyguard captain that he is under the King’s order to shut them up.

  15. This is bad writing… really bad writing. Just… no….

I… I just feel so bad for the translator… like… seriously… if you want to just stop…. I would not blame you….

If you just decided to read ahead and summarize until this part is over… I would not blame you….

I thank you for actually forcing yourself to actually translate this…. and I just feel really bad for you….
    ____________________________

Really…. some dude asked for glasses during an important mission…. so you are right to ignore him AND you don’t get mad??? You have a mission FROM THE KING!!!!

    Really???

And you leave because people who want to MURDER your target tell you to leave?

And again, you have too many simple solutions.

If this was a case where you had not enough power, not enough justification and no real tool… it’d work…

    But this isn’t….

I don’t understand these writers… why do they always think that drama is necessary? It’s not. Only add drama when you need it.

  16. Why the hell would someone summon him when he is doing his freaking job???!!!! what the actual hell? Isn’t the king’s order for Cain to be the bodyguard 24/7 or something similar???? Are they simply ignoring the king’s order? Those freaking guards if you were strong enough the saint wouldn’t be poisoned lol ik that was their scheme but incompetent.

Thank you very much for the chapter!

    1. I’m more confused as to why Cain left his position in the first place. Both royal orders and guarding the Saint have higher priorities than some random summons from some random noble. He literally even said so.

  17. Haaaaah….
Cain should’ve just replied to the bodyguards, “no, you’re all weak mofos, im literally the main character with the op cheats, what the fuck are you blabbering on about?” would’ve great, those bodyguards are more worthless than 1 hp meatshields…
