Volume 5 Chapter 20: Departure

On the day of their departure, a middle-aged MP accompanied by bodyguards appeared at the inn Cain was staying at.

Because there was no reception room due to the place being an inn, they borrowed the still-deserted cafeteria and sat down face-to-face.

“This is the compensation fee, amounting to twenty platinum coins. We are sorry for the trouble the MP, no, former MP of this country caused.”

Opening the box with extravagant finishings lying on the table, Cain saw twenty platinum coins beautifully lined up.

“I have received it.”

Cain closed the lid, and the MP took out a piece of parchment and rolled it out on the table.

“Then, if you would please sign here that you have accepted it.”

Cain read the writing on the parchment, and deciding it was all correct, signed it.

“That will be it then. I will submit this to the parliament. But still, honestly… he should have known what would happen if he started trouble with the kingdom…”

Grumbling to himself under his breath, the MP took the parchment from Cain, checked its contents, then rolled it up and put it back into its carrying tube, which he then gave to one of the bodyguards.

“Well, excuse me. I heard you would be leaving the city today. Take care on the way back. I have given you quite the sum of money here. Well, I doubt there are idiots that would try to pick a fight with an S-Rank adventurer…”

The Republic of Ilstin couldn’t protect them from any further problems.

While Ilstin was a merchant country, and thought that there weren’t any fools who would pick a fight with the customer, twenty platinum coins was quite the amount of money.

It would be too hasty to say they wouldn’t be targeted, thought Cain.

Cain saw the MP and bodyguards off, then quickly stored the box with the twenty platinum coins inside his Item Box.

Then, he returned to his room and got ready to leave.

Actually, he had stored all his luggage in his Item Box, so all he really did was clean the room with magic.

◇◇◇

There were a number of carriages lined up in front of the inn. The students all loaded their luggage onto the carriages they were going to be riding in.

On the way back, they would first be heading to Ghazal to stay a night there, then leaving Ilstin and heading for Terenza.

They wouldn’t be stopping in Drintor on the way back, going straight to the royal capital from Terenza instead.

While the students were disappointed, Cain felt relieved.

Lisabeth, whom he had taken with him from the arena, was also staying in Drintor, and if they stayed in the mansion, they would definitely meet.

Having to explain what had happened to Telestia and Liltana, there was a chance that it would get complicated again, so Cain was relieved that they would be going directly to the royal capital.

Having finished loading their luggage onto them, the students got in the carriages.

Cain, just like when they were going to Ilstin, was in the same carriage as Telestia, Silk, and Liltana.

He had thought that being in different carriages was fine, but he also had his duty as their bodyguards. So, he reluctantly got in the carriage.

With the escorts at the front and the back, the carriages set off.

Moving slowly through the city, they eventually left Tanbaal.

The carriages proceeded safely, and, staying a night at a staging outpost, they arrived in Ghazal by nightfall on the second day.

Originally, they were supposed to have had another party with Ghazal’s academy, but that was cancelled in light of the attack incident.

While Ralph requesting the attack was already shocking, the parliament had then decided that he would be sold as a criminal slave, and that his father, Malph, would lose his position as MP.

Pressured by Tanbaal that they couldn’t afford to make any other mistakes, the Ghazalian academy had proposed the cancellation, which Cain’s teachers had then accepted.

It was partly out of due to thinking about the students’ feelings, and partly out of the fact that they wouldn’t be able to truly enjoy the party any more.

The students got out of the carriages and entered the inn with their luggage, then separated up into their rooms.

On a different note, due to the incident, they didn’t have a free period any more.

While there were some complaints about that, when the students thought about the incident, they could but be convinced. Not to mention the fact that the only ones who could really complain about Cain, who was the head of a noble family and a higher-rank noble, were Telestia’s trio.

Finishing his meal in the inn, Cain laid down on his bed and thought about what would happen with Lisabeth.

“For the time being, it’ll be fine because Darmeshia’s there, but she can’t stay in the mansion forever… She could go back now, but I guess I’ll let her stay until we get to the royal capital.”

While there was a chance of problems occurring if she showed her face everywhere, Cain just went to sleep while expecting Darmeshia to deal with it somehow.

◇◇◇

Leaving Ghazal, it would now take them three days to reach the border. They would have to camp out while going there.

The first night ended without incident, and the carriages were now proceeding along a highway next to a forest.

“We’ll be at the border already tomorrow. It feels like it’s been ages.”

“That’s true. Well, Cain-kun was the busiest of all though.”

Silk winked at him, smiling. As there was no way he would speak about what had happened at the arena, Cain just smiled bitterly.

“Cain-sama, no matter how strong you may be, don’t go around doing something rash and getting injured.”

Said Telestia a little angrily, her cheeks puffed up, to which Cain smiled slightly and nodded.

“Even so –––– ah…”

Cain stopped speaking. Then, he suddenly opened the carriage’s door and jumped off.

Having jumped out of the carriage, Cain shouted at Claude.

“Claude-san! We might be attacked!”

Claude, who was at the very front, gave a signal to stop the whole procession at Cain’s shout, then rode up to him.

“Cain… an attack?”

“Yes, it might turn out to be one. They’re still somewhat far away, and I won’t be able to tell for sure if I don’t actually see them.”

Listening to the two’s conversation, sitting in the coachman’s seats, the servants’ faces twitched.

The total number of escorting adventurers they had was eight. Claude, Lina, Milly, and Nina’s group, and a party of four B-Rank adventurers. There were also four knights, making their combat power that of twelve people.

“Everyone, please move the carriages together. We might be being attacked!”

At Claude’s words, the coachmen lined up the carriages on the highway. The students stuck out their faces wondering what was going on, but the teachers told them to stay in the carriages.

“Cain, are we really being attacked…?”

One of the teachers joined Cain and Claude’s conversation.

“Probably. I haven’t actually seen them though, so I can’t tell for sure. They’re still somewhat a way away, but as it was an abnormal amount of people…”

“Cain, how many are there?”

The teacher gulped.

“…Likely more than two-hundred… or perhaps around that many, I think.”

“?! …What did you say!?”

“You’ve got to be kidding me…”

Claude’s face twitched, while the teacher became speechless.

The escorts, including the knights, were twelve people. And their opponents numbered over two-hundred.

The teacher’s face became one of despair just from hearing that.

“…What should the other students do…?”

“It’d be a pain if something happened and they got injured, so if they get out of the carriages and get into the ‘thing’ I’m about to take out, they’ll be safe.”

“Cain, you’re not planning on pulling out something ridiculous again, are you…?”

“No no, it’s just a vehicle. Sir, could you please guide the other students?”

“…All right. It’s not like I’d be of much help in a fight anyway. Then, let’s get started right away.”

The teacher ran up to all the carriages and told the students to get off.

“Then, here.”

A little further away, Cain took out the vehicle from his Item Box.

It looked like –– a prisoner transport bus1.

It was shaped like a bus, covered completely in metal, and its transparent glass windows were covered in iron meshes.

“Cain… just what is this…?”

Cain explained to Claude, whose mouth was hanging open.

“Although normally it’s for not letting captured people escape… But, that means you’ll also be safe inside. You can’t scratch it even with the hardest of swords, and I’ve added a magic defence as well, so it’ll be fine. It can also, of course, drive itself. And I also made sure to have plenty of seats left even if everyone gets on.”

Said Cain proudly, and Claude had no choice but to be amazed.

Because Milly and Nina had actually seen it with their own eyes, they knew Cain was quite ridiculous, but Claude and Lina, while they had known he was strong, had not understood just how absurd Cain actually was.

The teachers and the students were the same. Not even knowing where he had taken it out from, a mass of metal had suddenly appeared in front of them.

“Cain-sama, you did something absurd again…”

“Cain-kun, this is really big!”

Telestia was amazed, Silk was delighted, and Liltana was speechless.

“Come on, get in quick! They’re nearly in sight!”

The students, coachmen and teachers all got in one after the other.

“…I can see them.”

Where Cain was pointing at, the group heading towards the Esfortean party and kicking up a dust cloud came into sight.

  2. Is this prison bus one of the things that he made that this world’s logic would never think of? Also in the subcategory of not being able to fit in his mansion?

wasn’t being in the same carriage a sign of agreeing to be engaged? or was it only when sitting next to each other while being in the same carriage?

    1. They were just reaching really hard to tie him down…. Normally it’d go the other way, some random guy being that physically close to unwed royalty they’d have to get rid of him to protect their reputations.

  7. Thanks for the uploads as always!

Dude really just carries around a prison transport….. I wonder if he has more? Like no way he’d just make the one. There’s gotta be a reg person one, one made for stronger people and one that even he’d he hard pressed to bust out of.

    1. I guess the bus has the added benefit of being mobile. Theoretically, they could drive on ignoring the nuisances outside. At 30 mph (on unimproved roads) you’d outpace and out distance cavalry horses pretty quickly.
